The strong rise in the number of COVID-19 infections created an emergency situation in Austria:
To contain the spreading of the virus and to stabilize the Austrian health care system, the federal government and some provincial governments, in particular those of Tyrol and Vorarlberg, have taken far-reaching measures, such as restricting movement to ensure social distancing or locking down those industries that are not immediately essential to maintaining basic care for the population.
